Best Dental Cleaning & Hygienists in Chicago & Skokie

In addition to practicing good oral hygiene at home, most patients should be seen for a professional dental cleaning (also called prophylaxis) twice a year. Patients with a history of periodontal disease (gum disease) may be advised to have more frequent visits.

Regular professional care is important for stopping the progression of gingivitis and periodontal disease, as well as for identifying any other changes or problems before they become more significant.  At Dental Professionals, cleanings are accompanied by homecare guidance and suggestions, gum health measurements, oral cancer screening, and any necessary imaging.  You’re kept comfortable and informed every step of the way.

The highest level of personalized care

Our team of hygienists have every available technology at their disposal to keep you comfortable and healthy.  These include:

  • ultrasonic scalers,
  • glycine air polishers,
  • diode lasers,
  • implant-specific instrumentation (to protect implant surfaces from damage), &
  • Oraqix anesthetic gel.

We record what works for you, so that from appointment to appointment (even if you see a different hygienist) your preferences and individual health needs are properly met.

Taking Care of Your Teeth

The most important thing you can do to protect your teeth and gums is to practice good hygiene habits at home. For most patients, this means, brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing once for optimal health.  Many patients can benefit from other tools, discussed below, that may also enhance your oral health.

Fluoride for Health

Fluoride is a natural substance and is critically important to our health. Consuming acidic beverages and foods damages the enamel of the teeth, allowing bacteria to invade. Fluoride protects against this process by making teeth more resistant to acid. Fluoride can also reverse early decay. This is why it’s important to use toothpaste with fluoride added to it.  Your dentist may also recommend a fluoride rinse or prescription fluoride toothpaste.

About Sensitive Teeth

Occasionally, you may experience tooth sensitivity. In patients with good oral hygiene habits, this usually resolves on its own. However, if you have tooth sensitivity that doesn’t get better after a few days, please call us – we can recommend treatment or medicated toothpaste to help ease discomfort.

Oral Hygiene: Tools for Home

There are many really useful specialized oral healthcare products.  Most of these are available over-the-counter. Here are a few that we often recommend:

  • Electric Toothbrushes:  While traditional “manual” brushes can be equally effective, electric brushes seem to provide a more consistent cleaning, with less effort.  Our doctors and hygienists universally like Sonicare brand brushes.
  • Oral Irrigators: This has changed many patients lives.  Even patients who find they cannot easily develop a regular flossing regimen seem to love their irrigators.  The two we recommend are Hydrofloss (available online) and Waterpik (online and in pharmacies).
  • Mouthwashes:  Depending on the condition of your teeth and gums, our doctors and hygienists may recommend a variety of different rinses/mouthwashes.  Commonly, we have patients use a fluoride rinse (example: alcohol-free ACT) or alcohol-free gum-health rinse (example Closys).
