Dr. Phil Finkel of Chicago dental group, Dental Professionals, recently appeared in a CBS-2 news story about Chicago tap water, and the potential damages of too much fluoride on developing teeth.
CHICAGO, IL—January 20, 2011— Dr. Phil Finkel of Chicago Dental Professionals (a Chicago dental group) was recently interviewed by CBS-2 Chicago regarding the potentially damaging affects of too much fluoride on children’s teeth. The news story also examined fluoride levels in Chicago’s tap water. Although fluoride is still considered an effective means to reduce cavities and tooth decay, Finkel discussed a condition known as “fluorosis," which can cause discoloration in developing teeth.

“I pointed out that many patients have some white discoloration or blotchiness, due to mild fluorosis,” said Finkel. “I also discussed some extreme cases in which teeth are blemished with brown spots. This is due to fluoride getting into the enamel of teeth during early development.”
For more than 50 years, the federal standard of fluoride level in tap water has been a range of 0.7 to 1.2 mg. Chicago’s tap water stays within the accepted range, with a fluoride content of 0.9 to 1.05. However, a new recommendation suggests that the level should be set to no more than the lowest effective amount of 0.7mg.
In the CBS-2 story, Finkel advised that it is important to monitor children’s oral health between birth and 8 years old, during the time their teeth are still developing. If they consume too much fluoride during this period, they could potentially see fluorosis surface later in life.
Finkel added, “I want to emphasize that the benefits of using fluoride far outweigh the risks. Chicago’s tap water has a perfectly safe level of fluoride that should not harm children’s teeth.”
